Child Find

Abbeville County School District offers Child Find services for children ages 3 through 21. This includes children in public schools, private schools, students in Adult Education, and children who are home-schooled who meet the age criteria. It also includes the transition process from children served through BabyNet (Part C) ages birth to 3.

"Child find activities usually involve a screening process to determine whether the child should be referred for a full evaluation to determine eligibility for special education and related services. Intervention is another method. Screenings usually focus on medical, communication, cognition, motor, adaptive behavior, and/or social and emotional development. Child find activities, including these screenings, are free of charge to parents. If the screening finds a problem in one or more of these areas, then a full and individual evaluation is necessary. This is also free to the parents." (SC State Department of Education: Office of Special Education Services: Special Education Process Guide for SC: pg 23) Children served by BabyNet (Part C), should be referred by the BabyNet service agency to ACSD no later than 90 days prior to the child's 3rd birthday. A transition meeting will be scheduled to include the parent, BabyNet representative, and an LEA representative. The collection and use of data under the child find requirements are subject to confidentiality requirements under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Child Find appointments and BabyNet transition meetings can be scheduled by contacting Darrelyn Baughman at 864-366-5427.

Three year-old program:
This program serves students with disabilities. If you suspect your child has a disability, please contact the District Office and speak with Darrelyn Baughman to make a Child Find appointment so we can begin the screening/evaluation process. Please see additional Child Find information on the Child Find subpage.

Four year-old program:
This program requires that children meet certain criteria. To have a child screened, the legal guardian must bring the child to the school on registration day. The screening will involve the areas of language, cognitive, and motor development. Registration and screening will take about two hours per child. If the legal guardian is unable to bring the child for screening, a registration packet should be picked up at the school and returned with a family member/friend who can bring the child. If you miss the date(s) scheduled for your attendance school, you can bring your child to any of the other schools for Preschool Registration. Your child must be four on or before September 1st of the upcoming school year to participate in Preschool Registration.

Please bring the following to registration:

  1. Social Security Card
  2. Birth Certificate
  3. Medicaid Card (if applicable)
  4. Up-to-date SC Immunization Certificate (May be obtained from Health Department)
  5. Three and four year-olds should bring any vision and hearing reports from their doctors, if they have them.
